Regional SME Exporting Strategies

Michigan companies make things and provide services that people want to buy. This is the underlying economic principle driving the Regional SME Export Strategies for the EMCOG and EUP regions. In order to increase small and medium- sized enterprise (SME) exports, the East Michigan Council of Governments (EMCOG) and the Eastern Upper Peninsula Regional Planning and Development Commission (EUPRPDC) have partnered with the Michigan State University Regional SME Export Strategies Team to develop region-specific strategies with the goal of enhancing export market awareness and expanding SME export markets. These regional export strategies represent an important new component of broader regional development strategies. The U.S. Economic Development Administration (Department of Commerce) requires Economic Development Districts (EDDs) to develop and annually update broad Comprehensive Economic Development Strategies (CEDS). Exporting initiatives can become important new elements in these CEDS. EDDs consist of multi-county regions.
